Where We Practice
The Law Offices of Michael F. Campopiano represents injured people across Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. Two states, two very different sets of rules — and the difference often decides what a claim is worth.
Rhode Island uses pure comparative negligence. You can be found partly at fault and still recover; your award is simply reduced by your share. Massachusetts applies a 51% bar — cross that line and you recover nothing. Rhode Island gives you three years to file. Massachusetts pays your first $8,000 in medical bills through PIP regardless of fault, but limits pain-and-suffering claims unless you clear the $2,000 tort threshold.
Working out which state's rules apply, and how they interact when a case crosses the line, is the first thing we do on any file.

Do You Take Cases Outside These Cities?
Yes. The cities listed above are where we have the deepest local knowledge and the largest share of our caseload, but the firm represents injured people throughout Rhode Island and across Massachusetts. If you were hurt in Westerly, Bristol, Coventry, Johnston, Central Falls, Barrington or anywhere else in the state, the analysis is the same and so is the representation.
The same is true across the Massachusetts line. Being injured in a town without a dedicated page here does not make your claim harder to pursue — it simply means the page has not been written yet.
What does change by location is practical: which police department holds the report, which municipality maintained the road or sidewalk, and which court will hear the case if it is filed. Claims against a city or the state carry their own notice requirements, and in Rhode Island that notice window is 60 days — far shorter than the three-year deadline most people have in mind. If your injury involved public property, a municipal vehicle or a government-maintained sidewalk, call sooner rather than later.
How We Work, Wherever You Are
The city changes the courthouse and the local knowledge. It does not change how we build a case.
The first conversation is free and costs you nothing to have. Describe what happened. We will tell you honestly whether you have a claim worth pursuing — including when you do not.
We investigate before we negotiate.
We value the claim properly before making a demand.
We are prepared to file suit.
Which Court Hears Your Case
Venue usually follows where the injury happened. In Rhode Island that means the Superior Court for the county involved — Providence County for Providence, Cranston, Pawtucket, Warwick, East Providence, North Providence, Woonsocket and Lincoln; Newport County for Newport. In Massachusetts it means the Superior Court for Suffolk, Worcester, Hampden, Middlesex, Essex, Norfolk, Plymouth or Bristol County depending on the city. Local familiarity matters more than most people expect: filing practices, scheduling and jury pools differ meaningfully between them.
When Your Case Crosses the State Line
A crash on the Fall River line. A fall at a Massachusetts business when you live in Rhode Island. A rideshare that starts in Providence and ends in Boston. These cases turn on which state's law governs, and the answer is not always obvious — getting it wrong can cost the claim entirely, because the Massachusetts 51% bar has no Rhode Island equivalent.
We handle both. Call (401) 288-3888 and we will tell you which rules apply to your situation before you decide anything. Free consultation, in English, Spanish or Portuguese.

The first conversation is free and costs you nothing to have. Describe what happened. We will tell you honestly whether you have a claim worth pursuing — including when you do not.
We investigate before we negotiate. Police reports, scene photographs, surveillance footage, maintenance and inspection logs, witness statements, and your medical records. Evidence disappears quickly: footage is often overwritten within days, and a repaired pothole or cleared walkway cannot be photographed after the fact. This is the single strongest argument for calling early.
We value the claim properly before making a demand. That means present medical costs, future treatment, lost income, reduced earning capacity, and the effect on your daily life — not just the bills already in hand.
We are prepared to file suit. Most cases settle. The ones that settle well are the ones the insurer believes will otherwise end up in front of a jury in the right county court.
