You had the green light, or you thought you did. Then a car came out of nowhere and hit the side of yours. In a T-bone crash, there is no hood or trunk to absorb the blow, and the injuries can be severe.

Overview

What Is a T-Bone or Side-Impact Accident?

A T-bone, also called a side-impact or broadside collision, happens when the front of one vehicle strikes the side of another. The two cars meet at roughly a right angle, forming the shape of the letter T. These crashes most often happen at intersections, but they also happen in parking lots, driveways, and at highway on-ramps.

Injuries

Why Side-Impact Crashes Are So Dangerous

The front and rear of a car have crumple zones built to absorb a crash. The sides do not. There is only a door and a few inches of space between you and the other vehicle. Injuries often include:

  • Head injuries and concussions from hitting the window or door frame
  • Neck and spine injuries
  • Broken ribs and chest injuries
  • Pelvis, hip, and shoulder fractures
  • Internal organ injuries

The driver or passenger on the impact side is usually hurt the worst. Get medical care right away, even if you feel fine. Our guide to traumatic brain injuries in Rhode Island explains symptoms that can show up later.

Causes

Common Causes of T-Bone Crashes in Rhode Island

Most T-bone collisions come down to one driver failing to give the right of way. Common causes include:

  • Running a red light or stop sign. A driver enters the intersection when they should have stopped.
  • Failing to yield on a left turn. A driver turns across oncoming traffic and misjudges the gap.
  • Speeding through a yellow light. A driver tries to beat the signal and hits a car already in the intersection.
  • Distracted driving. A driver glances at a phone and misses the signal or the cross traffic. Read about distracted driving accidents in Rhode Island.
  • Blocked sightlines. Parked cars, snowbanks, and buildings hide cross traffic at tight intersections.

These crashes can happen anywhere, but busy corridors raise the risk, including Broad Street in Providence, Reservoir Avenue in Cranston, Post Road in Warwick, and Smith Street through Providence and North Providence. We serve clients across the state, including our Providence and Pawtucket communities.

Fault

Who Is at Fault in a T-Bone Accident?

Fault usually follows the right of way. The driver who ran the light or stop sign is typically responsible. A driver turning left must yield to oncoming traffic. The hard part is proof. At many intersections it comes down to two drivers, each saying the light was green.

Rhode Island follows pure comparative negligence (R.I. Gen. Laws § 9-20-4). If an insurer says you share the blame, you can still recover, but your compensation is reduced by your percentage of fault. We work to keep that number as low as the evidence allows.

Evidence

Evidence We Use to Prove Who Had the Right of Way

When the story is “he said, she said,” we look for what cannot be argued with:

  • Traffic camera, business surveillance, and dash-cam footage
  • Vehicle event data recorders that capture speed and braking
  • Damage patterns that show angle and speed of impact
  • Witness statements and 911 recordings
  • Signal timing records, when they are available
  • Accident reconstruction experts for disputed cases

Video is often overwritten within days, so the earlier you call, the more we can save. Need the police report? Here is how to get your Rhode Island car accident report.

Passengers

If You Were a Passenger

Passengers have rights too. You were not driving, so you are generally not blamed for the crash. You may have a claim against the driver who hit you, and in some cases against the driver of the car you were riding in. We can review all of your options, including claims involving uninsured and hit-and-run drivers and what your car insurance coverage provides.

Compensation

What You Can Recover After a T-Bone Accident

  • Medical bills, past and future, including surgery and therapy
  • Lost wages and reduced earning capacity
  • Vehicle repair or replacement
  • Pain and suffering
  • Loss of enjoyment of life

Next steps

What to Do After a T-Bone Collision

Step 1

Call 911 and get medical care, even if you feel okay.

Step 2

Photograph the intersection, the signals, the vehicles, and your injuries.

Step 3

Look for cameras on nearby businesses and ask for the footage to be saved.

Step 4

Get names, insurance details, and witness contact information.

Step 5

Do not argue about the light or admit fault, and do not give a recorded statement to any insurer.

Step 6

Call MFC Law as soon as you can.
Deadlines

Why Acting Quickly Matters

Rhode Island gives you three years from the date of the crash to file a personal injury lawsuit (R.I. Gen. Laws § 9-1-14). In an intersection case, the strongest evidence is also the most fragile. Camera footage is overwritten, cars are repaired, and witnesses move on. Start now.

Yes. “T-bone,” “side-impact,” and “broadside” all describe a crash where the front of one vehicle hits the side of another. The legal rules are the same.

Fault is decided by evidence, not by who is more convincing at the scene. Camera footage, vehicle data, damage patterns, and witnesses can show what happened. We gather them quickly, before they disappear.

A driver turning left must yield to oncoming traffic, so the turning driver is often found at fault. There are exceptions, such as when the oncoming driver ran a red light or was speeding. We look at the full picture.

Yes. Rhode Island uses pure comparative negligence, so your compensation is reduced by your share of fault rather than denied.

You may be able to claim against either driver, depending on who caused the crash. We review the facts and every available policy to find the best route for you.
