If you were injured by a product and suspect it may have been recalled, a recall record is among the most powerful evidence available. It demonstrates that the manufacturer or regulatory agency identified the product as defective and initiated formal action to remove it from the market. This page explains exactly how to search every major recall database and what a recall means for your legal claim in Rhode Island.
At the Law Offices of Michael F. Campopiano, we investigate recall history as part of every product liability case. If you were injured and believe the product may have been recalled, call us at (401) 288-3888. The consultation is free and you pay nothing unless we win.

Where to Search for Product Recalls
recalls.gov — The Official Federal Starting Point
The US government maintains recalls.gov as a portal linking to all major recall databases. From recalls.gov you can search across consumer products, vehicles, food, drugs, and medical devices simultaneously. This is the best starting point for any recall search.
CPSC — Consumer Products
The Consumer Product Safety Commission at cpsc.gov/recalls maintains a searchable database of recalled consumer products including toys, appliances, furniture, clothing, children’s products, electronics, and recreational equipment. You can search by product name, brand, or category. You can also report a product-related injury at SaferProducts.gov, which creates an official public record and may trigger a CPSC investigation.
NHTSA — Vehicles and Vehicle Equipment
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at nhtsa.gov/recalls maintains a vehicle recall database searchable by VIN number, make, model, and year. If you were injured in a vehicle accident and suspect a vehicle defect, entering the VIN will show all recalls issued for that specific vehicle. NHTSA also covers child car seats, tires, and vehicle equipment.
FDA — Drugs and Medical Devices
The FDA maintains separate searchable databases for drug recalls and medical device recalls. For medical devices, search the FDA’s Medical Device Recalls database. For drugs and biologics, search the Enforcement Reports database. The FDA classifies recalls by severity: Class I (serious health consequences or death), Class II (temporary or reversible consequences), and Class III (unlikely to cause health consequences).
USDA — Food and Meat Products
The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service at fsis.usda.gov maintains a recall database for meat, poultry, and egg products. The FDA covers most other food and dietary supplement recalls. For food-related injury claims, check both databases.
What a Recall Means for Your Product Liability Claim in Rhode Island
A Recall Is Evidence of a Defect
A formal product recall is an admission, or at minimum a regulatory determination, that the product presented a safety risk. A recall record for the specific product that injured you significantly strengthens the defect element of your claim.
A Recall Can Establish Notice
In failure-to-warn cases, a recall also establishes when the manufacturer had notice of the defect. If a recall was issued before your injury occurred and the manufacturer had already identified the problem, the case for liability is substantially stronger.
Search the Specific Product, Not Just the Brand
Recalls are issued for specific model numbers, lot numbers, or production date ranges — not entire brand lines. Search the specific product model and, where available, the lot number or production date found on the packaging. A recall of a different model by the same manufacturer does not cover your specific product.
What to Do After Finding a Recall Record
- Document the recall: screenshot the recall notice and note the recall number, identified defect, and date of recall
- Preserve the product: do not participate in any manufacturer recall program requiring you to return or destroy the product before it has been examined as evidence in your legal case
- Contact an attorney before responding to the recall notice: recall programs often include release language that can affect your legal rights
- Save all recall communications: letters, emails, or other notices from the manufacturer or retailer

Frequently Asked Questions: Product Recalls and Your Legal Claim
1. Does a product recall automatically mean I can file a lawsuit?
A recall strengthens a product liability claim by providing evidence of a defect, but it does not automatically create liability. You must still demonstrate the specific defect covered by the recall caused your specific injury.
2. What if the product I used was not officially recalled?
The absence of a recall does not mean the product was not defective. Many defective products are never recalled. MFC Law investigates whether the product had known defects through prior complaints, litigation history, and expert examination of the product itself.
3. Can I participate in the recall program and still file a lawsuit?
This depends on the specific recall program terms. Some programs include release language that waives legal claims. Do not participate in a manufacturer’s recall program or return a product that injured you without first consulting an attorney.
4. How long do I have to file a product liability claim in Rhode Island?
Three years from the date of injury under Rhode Island’s statute of limitations. The deadline runs from the injury date, not the recall date.
